Last Wednesday, a 28-year-old Air India Express pilot passed away shortly after a domestic Indian flight from Srinagar to Delhi. Unfortunately, this is not the first time either.
The specific flight involved is unknown. The airline operates three daily flights between these two cities. After landing, the pilot reportedly went to the aircraft lavatory as he had to throw up. It is reported that he subsequently displayed symptoms of anxiety. Following this, the flight crew went to the Air India Express dispatch office, where the pilot collapsed due to a cardiac arrest.
The pilot was rushed to the hospital after medical personnel had urgently been called. Despite resuscitation attempts, he died there. ‘We deeply regret the loss of a valued colleague due to a medical condition. Our thoughts are with the family during this time of profound grief. We are extending all possible assistance to them as we all cope with this tremendous loss,’ said a spokesperson for the airline in a statement to Telegraph India.
Air India Express is cooperating with the authorities to investigate the exact cause of death. ‘We request all concerned to respect privacy at this time and avoid unnecessary speculation, as we are committed to assisting the relevant authorities in a fair process,’ the airline stated.
‘Signs of Discomfort’
In November 2023, another Air India pilot died during a training session. The 30-year-old pilot showed ‘signs of discomfort’ before suffering a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital at Delhi airport. Resuscitation proved unsuccessful in that instance as well.
